Psalters, illuminated
Psalters were illuminated as early as the 8c and 9c and until the beginning of the 14c they are easily the most numerous of illuminated MSS. Around 1220, portable MS volumes supplanted the huge tomes favoured in the preceding century. The change in size resulted in a more angular and necessarily more compact script. For example, the initial letters were smaller, and the text was written in double columns. -
